Skilled Orthopedic Surgery for Dogs and Cats in Indianapolis
When an orthopedic condition affects your pet’s comfort or mobility, the right treatment can help them return to a more active life. Velocity Vet provides pet orthopedic surgery for select joint and bone conditions, combining surgical care with a strong understanding of rehabilitation, movement, and recovery.
Velocity Vet does not offer procedures performed by board-certified veterinary surgeons or orthopedic specialists. If your pet needs a procedure that requires specialty surgical care, our team can help guide you through the referral process and connect you with an appropriate specialist.
Our team evaluates each patient individually before recommending a procedure. We’ll consider your pet’s condition, overall health, activity level, and functional needs while discussing the available treatment options with you. Because rehabilitation is central to our practice, we can also plan for the recovery process from the beginning.
Orthopedic Procedures at Velocity Vet
Velocity Vet offers the following orthopedic procedures:
Femoral Head Ostectomy
A femoral head ostectomy, commonly called an FHO, involves removing the head and neck of the femur. This procedure may be considered for pets experiencing significant hip pain or loss of function due to certain injuries or joint conditions.
After surgery, the surrounding muscles help support the joint as a functional connection forms. A thoughtful rehabilitation plan can encourage appropriate movement, rebuild strength, and help the pet adjust during recovery.
Stifle Extracapsular Repair
The cranial cruciate ligament helps stabilize the knee, or stifle joint. When this ligament ruptures, the joint can become unstable and painful. Pets may limp, avoid placing weight on the affected leg, or struggle with everyday movements.
Stifle extracapsular repair uses surgical material outside the joint to provide added stability while the surrounding tissues heal. Recovery typically involves controlled activity followed by a gradual return to movement. Our pet rehabilitation services can support strength, joint function, and safe progression after the procedure.
Medial Luxating Patella Repair
A medial luxating patella occurs when the kneecap shifts out of its normal position toward the inside of the leg. Some pets may occasionally skip a step or hold the affected leg up, while more significant cases can cause ongoing discomfort and mobility problems.
Surgical repair is intended to improve the kneecap’s alignment and stability. The exact approach depends on the individual joint and the factors contributing to the luxation.
Recovery Is Part of the Plan
Orthopedic surgery is one step in a larger recovery process. After the procedure, pets often need a carefully managed balance of rest and progressive movement. Doing too much too soon may place unnecessary stress on healing tissues, while extended inactivity can contribute to stiffness and muscle loss.
Velocity Vet’s rehabilitation-focused setting allows us to coordinate surgical recovery with therapeutic exercise, gait training, muscle building, and other appropriate treatments. We’ll monitor progress and adjust the plan as your pet becomes stronger and more comfortable.
Our team can also incorporate pain management into the recovery plan when needed. By addressing surgery, comfort, mobility, and rehabilitation together, we aim to support lasting function rather than focusing only on the procedure itself.
